Bring: Sleeping bag, toothbrush, bottle water, tooth paste, wash cloth (all in ziplock with name on it) one stuffed lovie (to be read to and for comfort), flashlight and pillow. Everything must have their name on it!

Please come with your tummies full and in warm pajamas. Change of clothing you (parent's) bring upon pick-up April 15th 9am sharp.

Happy 100 Anniversay today Girl Scouts!

Sara and I (Christina and Cameron) helped make 10,000 meals yesterday through Stop Hunger which the Cherrydale Methodist church organized.

Janet, our SU leader said that this would be a great Service Project to coordinate for the Arlington Service Unit 60-2.  All we need to do is round up the labor and of course the multi-purpose room at Key.  It takes at least 40-80 people to package 10,000 meals in 2 hours.   Further research is underway as well as the kids will need to decide whether this is an interest.

MARCH UPDATE

Hello Everybody,
I just wanted to extend a great big thank you to Karen Marangi, Jen Rosenberg and Sara Snow for the Long Branch Overnight. The experience was an event of a lifetime for our girls and the hope of many more to come.  Also, I wanted to give a shout out to Jennifer Powell who has graciously offered her beautiful backyard for our overnight encampment in April. (April 14th-15).  Thank you ladies for making our troop a memory that will be cherished for a lifetime.


UPDATE MARCH HIGHLIGHTS
1. Longbranch Nature Highlights:
Christina Yakobi, Long Branch Naturalist, was uniquely excellent and qualified to teach the kids (she told a great folk story about why the moon had a rabbit shape on its surface instead of monkeys or hyenas; showed us about the spring frogs -peepers which were incredibilbly loud; we saw tadpoles, turtles; were read to at bedtime; fed turtles in the am; and were shown the horned owl--and their lovely pellets YUK! Then we took a lovely morning hike).Good times!  Karen Marangi (mother to all the overnighters --it seemed) and Jen Rosenberg excellently organized us with snacks and breakfast; Sara organized the event quite seemlessly and 5 moms went - Heather Deihl, Ana Maria Gray, Karen Marangi, Anna Lucca, Sara Snow (leader) and Alina Trimble (CO-LEADER aka First Aider extraordinaire:)  It was an amazing time! (ALTHOUGH AT $300 for 8 kids with payment of $32 we were $44 shy of our target plus, the $75 of supplies and $2 patch; therefore, we need to increase our buffer for troop expenses going forward -SEE MONEY MATTERS below)

3. Meeting 3 --12 March, 2012  3:45-5:30
We will be going over Respecting Authority Petal and getting a visit from our School Principle and maybe (the FBI - I am still working the angle on this one, but I think I have the insiders connection ;)  Also, we might be discussing our Service Project with our girls with Anna Lucca who is kind enough to put together alternatives; one is perhaps a heater for the inside pool of Longbranch for both the turtles and fish there.  More to come.

4. National Air and Space Museum 24 March, 2012  10-2pm

I was thinking that we can go individually as a family or pair off in groups. Who is interested in going to this event? 5. MONEY MATTERS:  We (Jennifer Powell, and Sara Snow) have been discussing and have agreed that we need to ask each of you for an additional $40 for dues of unforeseen expenses outside of the monthly meetings which were originally budgeted. We are at a deficit for Longbranch ($123) and given the upcoming future troop expenses like the girls scout pins and more patches outside of the daisy petals which the girls have been earning.  Also, we need a buffer of at least $10/child which if not used this year will be used next year.   Please mail the check to Jennifer Powell (2128 N. Pollard Street, 22207) or hand it to Sara or me at our next Troop Meeting Monday--3/12.  Should you have any questions or concerns please don't hesitate in calling or emailing.

Also, if you haven't registered for the Rock the Mall, I would do so because once they run out of t-shirts and patches- that is it.  We will go to this event inidividually and pair off into groups to give us flexibility.  It will be a fun event in June so don't miss it--check out the link http://100.gscnc.org/rtm_about.html

Aladdin March11 100th Year Anniversary
This performance is headed by our very own Suzanne Edwards at Key who is the Girl Scout Leader/mother for both 2nd and 5th Grade. 

It is only $6/child for the Encore performance of Aladdin on March 11th at 1:45pm at Kenmore Middle School  (--you know  the song..."I can show you the world....shining shimmering splendid tell me princess when was the last time you let your heart decide...something something something")

1. A big thank you to Anna and Sara for the World Thinking Prep:
Fun was had at Anna Lucca's house learning about Chile:
their dance (la Cueca),
their bird (Andea Condor)
making their flower (copihue) and their flag (which looks alot like Texas!)
Geography
Architecture
earthquakes (hope we didn't instill any fears)
Food (very important element that should never be overlooked--banana chips and corn, mango juice and grapes(their grape farmers are cleaning up during winter month in production)

2. Look Aheads--  Feb 13 is the sign up for day time camps for girl scout;

 b- April 14          Tent Overnight (Trimble house although if your house is better please volunteer. Both Sara and I have tents to fit us all)
 c- May 18th -20  Overnight Encampment with SU 60 Arlingtong at the Shenandoa Meadows --Need to let Sara or I know if you are interested in having your child join us for this or if you will go with her to spend the day. Space is limited.

4. It's official I am now a certified Pediatric and Adult First Aider CPR certified --which means we can do field trips.

5. $5 for Thinking Day to Sara for Thinking Day and Pizza for 2/23 Pizza school-wide event; $30 for Encampment May 18-20 deposit.

Want to spend your summer exploring the outdoors?
Well, we can help you do just that! Whether you are looking for Day and Evening Camps or want to spend two weeks at a Sleep Away Camp, we have the program for you!  Find the brochures here:

Our Summer Day and Evening Camps offer girls in grades K-12 a chance to explore the world around them. Girls will have a ton
of fun doing activities from singing and playing games to swimming and high adventure. The themes and settings for each camp are so different that each girl will easily find one that fits her interests best. Camps are offered in Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia and run from June 18th to August 17th and can be half day, full day or twilight. Camps range from one or two weeks.
Sleep Away Camp offers overnight adventures for girls in grades K-12. Memories are sure to be made roasting marshmallows around a campfire, singing songs, enjoying meals in the dining hall with lots of friends, hiking trails, splashing in the pool or creek, testing mind and body in a rigorous challenge course, or getting creative with crafts. Programs run from June 17th to August 10th .
Bus transportation is available for certain Day and Evening Camps and all four Sleep Away Camps.
Registration for Sleep Away Camp is first come, first served and opens January 24th, 2012.
Registration for Day and Evening Camps is either, lottery or first come first served and opens February 13th, 2012.
All registrations/ applications must be completed online. Financial assistance is available.

My Promise, My Faith kickoff eventSunday, January 29, 1-4 pm, GSCNC DC officeThis event will launch the new GSUSA faith award, My Promise, My Faith.  Girls will have the chance to complete the first of 5 steps towards earning this award at the event.  Complete requirements for the My Promise, My Faith award can be found in the Girl's Guide to Girl Scouting.  Girls who complete the criteria for My Promise, My Faith by April 28th will be asked to stand for recognition at the Interfaith Service.   Ticketing opens for the Interfaith ServiceWednesday, February 1The service is free to attend but you must register and receive a ticket, even if you are volunteering.  Registration will be done through Survey Monkey in the month of February and is first come, first serve.  Tickets will be mailed in March.
